The Virginia Highland area of Atlanta had its beginnings as a streetcar neighborhood. When streetcars ceased to be central to the growing city, VH (as residents call it) became the place to try new local flavors, whether it be music or cuisine. Today VH is a focus for up and coming musicians, specialty shops with offerings from local artists, and unique restaurants. This part of the city is known for its trendy appeal and unique businesses. The larger city of Atlanta is a thriving metropolis with international influence as the fastest growing city in the States. Education
Virginia Highlands is zoned to Atlanta Public schools, some of the schools being Morningside Elementary, Henry W. Grady, and Inman Middle School. The larger community of Atlanta is full of schools and a number of special educational opportunities. Alongside traditional public and private schools, there are also Montessori, accredited Muslim schools, and enriched programs for academically gifted children. For post-secondary students, Atlanta is home to dozens of colleges and universities, including: Georgia State, the Art Institute of Atlanta, Georgia Medical Institute, Beulah Heights Bible College, Morehouse College, and Emory University.


Recreation
The Virginia Highlands area of Atlanta is an excellent place to enjoy the diversity of the city. Local artists create an enviable music scene to enjoy, from mariachi to hip hop. One of Atlanta's epithets is indeed the "hip hop city", due to the large number of rap and hip hop artists who originated here. Because of the incredibly diverse population, Atlanta is also home to some of the best ethnic cuisine available, whether your preference be from the East or West. Some of the better-known restaurants in the area include the Atkins Park Tavern, Doc Chey's Noodle House, VINE, and Surin of Thailand. Many of the eateries include live music, such as Blind Willie's, known as "Atlanta's premier blues club". The shops in the area are equally diverse, selling selections from local artists, from clothing to paintings, kitchenware and jewelry. As a city, Atlanta's hospitality and diversions are endless. Two of the most popular attractions in the city are the Zoo Atlanta and the Georgia Aquarium. The zoo is world-renowned for its work with endangered species and currently features a giant panda exhibit until 2009.
